Un artículo académico apunta que cuando menos la mitad de la subida del coste del bitcoin en 2017 puede ser atribuida a una manipulación ordenada de los precios.
El maestro de finanzas de la Universidad de Texas John Griffin, que lleva tiempo advirtiendo fraudes en mercados financieros, y el estudiante de posgrado Amin Shams han examinado millones de transacciones efectuadas en casa de cambio de criptomonedas Bitfinex.
En el artículo de 66 páginas, los autores arguyen que la criptomoneda tether, aparentemente apoyada por dólares americanos en una cuenta corriente y que marcha sobre la cadena de bloques Ethereum, fue utilizada para adquirir bitcoins en instantes clave de bajada de cotización, lo que asistió a manipular el precio de la criptodivisa más popular.
